Best Camera for Kids: Kids Polaroid and Digital Guide

By Rachael E Stout

Fujifilm Instax Mini 8

Do you remember the first time you took a picture? I was the 10 year old on the block who was always carrying around a disposable camera. Taking pictures helps boost kid’s spatial awareness, creativity, and sense of independence.

Taking pictures is such an everyday part of life these days. Let your kids enjoy their own version of this everyday accessory. These days digital cameras for kids are better than ever! If you are looking for a fun way to get instant pictures, there are kid’s instant cameras that are now available.

I’ve taken the hassle out of having to look for the best camera for kids with this helpful guide. All of these cameras your children are sure to love!

Vtech Kidizoom Camera Connect

Vtech is one of the premier kids education companies. Their camera is no exception- and it records video too! The 1.8” screen allows kids to edit their photos with silly stickers or change recorded sound with fun effects. The camera comes with 3 fun games to help increase creativity, logic and memory. Overall, this camera would be the perfect introduction to technology for a young child.

Vtech Kidizoom Conect

The camera connects to a Mac or Windows computer with included USB cord to download pictures. You can also install additional apps via the free VTech Learning Lodge. The installed memory will hold 800 pictures, but if you add a lot of apps it could become crowded. Thankfully, Vtech included space for a SD memory card (not included).

Available in blue or pink. For ages 3-8. If your kid likes playing games and is curious, this might be your pick.

Playskool Showcam 2-in-1 Digital Camera and Projector

From the longtime makers of kids toys, comes a great adaptation of the digital camera for kids. Made with simple, big buttons it provides ease of use. Use the built in editing to customize the pictures with silly stamps, sounds, and animations. A cool feature kids are bound to love is the ability to project pictures. Third of you kid asking for more film every few minutes? With a switch of a flip they can display their masterpieces on the wall to all their friends.

Playskool Showcam

The Showcam will hold approximately 1000 pics. It does not have the option for additional storage. To get the pictures transferred to the camera will take a USB cord (not included). You will also need 4 AA batteries.

Available in white or black. For ages 3-7. A little more on the expensive side due to the projector, I would only get this for a kid if I knew they would use it.

Vtech Kidizoom Action Cam

Chances are, you have heard of GoPro these days. If you wanted a durable action camera for your child – but didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars – this is the camera for you! Durable and waterproof, it was made to be indestructable. This camera can be attached to bikes, skateboards, or worn on helmets. It has built in games, and allows you to adjust the videos on the go.

The camera is has a re-chargable battery. It stores 2.5 hours of video with the included storage, but you can add a SD card for more memory. The camera comes with a wrist strap, 3 mounts, and a waterproof camera case. A micro-USB cable is included to transfer all that video to your computer.

Kidizoom Action Cam

In yellow, purple, and pink. For ages 4-9. While the video is a little lower quality, the price can’t be beat! Kids are sure to have hours of fun with this camera.

Fujifilm Instax Mini

Looking for a kids Polaroid camera? I would suggest the Fuji Instax- not only is it cheaper, but so is the film. While not made for children, it is very easy to use. Kids will love being able to pose for pictures with friends and get immediate results.

The picture size of the instant film is the size of a credit card. Film develops instantly and comes in an easy to upload pack. This camera does not store its pictures, so you will NOT be able to upload pictures to your computer. You will have to purchase film which can get expensive.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 8

Camera comes in black, orange, pink, pale blue, white, yellow, purple, red, and a special hello kitty version. I would recommend this camera for 6+. Having the ability to instantly capture pictures is something kids are sure to enjoy.

You can also compare the best instant cameras available.

Nikon Coolpix s33

Have a kid that wants a big persons camera? The Nikon Coolpix is shockproof up to five feet off of the ground, waterproof, and it will hold together even if stuck in a freezer. Featuring oversized buttons and easy menus, this camera will be a great starter.

Nikon Coolpix S33

A 13MP camera capable of recording, this provides the highest quality on our list. USB cable is included to transfer pictures to the computer. It has a rechargeable battery. You will need a SD card to store additional pictures.

It comes in white, blue, pink, and yellow. Recommended for ages 5+. This would be a great camera for a kid who wants to be a grown up, and you won’t have to worry that it will break!

Conclusion

Overall, what type of camera you decide on is based on what will work best for your child. All the cameras on the list will be hard to destroy and provide hours of fun. A digital camera gives the option of taking more pictures, but an instant camera can provide a novelty feeling to kids.

Older kids might like smaller cameras.

Finding a camera for kids can be hard, but I hope you found this list helpful. No matter what you decide, I hope you enjoy making picture memories with you child. They will be precious moments you can look back on for years to come!
