Best Umbrella Stroller: Comprehensive Reviews for Busy Moms

By Elizabeth Kroll

Not too long ago, I decided to put my career in advertising on hold to become a full-time stay at home mom of two young ones, my 7-month-old daughter and my 3-year-old son. I’m an active woman, so I enjoy including my kids in a lot of every day life activities. Therefore, I spent a lot of time looking at the top rated umbrella strollers in order to find one that suited my needs. Umbrella strollers are probably the simplest type of stroller models out there, but I was pleasantly surprised by how some of the best cheap umbrella stroller models still come packed with many features.

For a short trip, what you probably want most is the ability to easily fold up and lift the stroller. But in order for me to narrow down the various models to find the top models on the market today, I looked for additional features like a sturdy frame, plenty of canopy and sun visor coverage for my child, and generous storage areas both underneath and behind the stroller. I wanted something that I could push easily, kept my child securely in place, and yet was easy enough to fold up and put away when I was by myself.

Different Types of Umbrella Strollers

Named for their similarity in folding up like a regular umbrella, there’s a lot of variety in features and options for the best umbrella strollers being sold today. Beyond their compact design and ease in folding, it’s important to take into consideration just where and how you plan on using the stroller. For short trips to the park or while on vacation, weight is probably the biggest factor. If you’ve got two little kids like me, of course then what you want is a stroller that can handle both of them at the same time. And if you’re a road warrior mom, then look for a model that’s easy to heft up into those overhead bins on the plane.

Reclining Umbrella Stroller

Any stroller that folds up “accordion style” qualifies as an umbrella stroller, but some models allow you to adjust how the seat(s) recline. My son is more active and likes to sit up more while my daughter is younger and often needs to rest so seats that can recline are an important aspect.

Double Umbrella Stroller

I didn’t see any “in-line” models that qualify as an umbrella stroller, but the best umbrella strollers for two children (all tandem or “side by side” models) surprised me by how compact and lightweight they were. The top models can easily fit through a doorway and yet are light enough for a petite woman like me to carry.

Umbrella Stroller for Travel

Whether you’ve got a small car with no trunk and need to stash it in the back seat or simply don’t want to lug around a big piece of equipment, the top rated umbrella strollers for travel got top marks for being simple to use, convenient for baby, as well as having additional features like a tray and cup holder.

Best Umbrella Stroller Brands

While there are many of fine manufacturers of umbrella strollers out there, all of the umbrella stroller reviews that I read kept mentioning the Summer Infant brand. After trying out several of their models, I can definitely concur that Summer Infant seems to have found the sweet spot between a convenient, lightweight stroller and all of the safety and comfort features that you want in a good travel stroller.

Other very popular brands include Chicco, Baby Trend, Kolcraft and Joovy. Disney definitely took the cake for the best cheap umbrella stroller that I had the chance to review.

Top 5 Best Umbrella Strollers

After selecting all of the best models in terms of being lightweight and easy to fold up and carry with you either in the car or when traveling by plane, I selected the following models based on their design (sturdy yet maneuverable), storage capabilities (both underneath and with rear pockets), canopy and sun visor design (especially important for summertime trips), and comfort when pushing the stroller. Additional high marks were given for padded, secure harnesses and the option of having a tray and/or cup holder for the parent/pusher and child. From there, the best models were ones that rolled smoothly and easily, had a secure brake that was easy to activate, and last, but definitely not least, had a nice color/pattern design.

Kolcraft Cloud Plus Lightweight Stroller

Kolcraft Cloud Plus Lightweight Stroller

The model that I reviewed came in a “fire red” design, and I certainly can concur that this is an eye-catching design. Weighing just a shade under 12 pounds, this stroller is a godsend for when you’re on the road with your little one. The pushing bar is more comfortable than many other umbrella-style grips and includes a really nice tray, complete with two cup holders. I usually use one for juice and the other one for my keys so I don’t even need a purse when I’m out and about with the Kolcraft Cloud.

For summertime, the Kolcraft Cloud Plus is great as the canopy is quite large and easily keeps your child in full shade. Durable enough to handle a 50-pound toddler, the Kolcraft Cloud also includes a tray and cup holder for your child as well. Pull one strap and the whole thing folds up while remaining in the upright position, a super handy feature for when you’re dealing with a squirming kid. There’s an extra-large storage area underneath where you can easily fit diaper supplies and plenty of goodies or vacation souvenirs that you buy along the way.

Chicco Capri Lightweight Stroller

Chicco Capri Lightweight Stroller

Even before I gave birth to my first child three years ago, I’d had friends of mine rave about the products from Chicco. After eagerly scanning through all of the umbrella stroller reviews that I could find, I was excited to check out the Chicco Capri. I really liked this lightweight stroller (about 11 pounds empty) as it included a special carry bag with a shoulder strap. If you’ve ever had to do more than throw your stroller into the trunk, then you’ll definitely appreciate the bag and strap as it makes transporting it very comfortable indeed.

Your child will ride in comfortable security with the 5-point safety harness. When he or she gets sleepy, the seat can recline. The storage area underneath the stroller isn’t huge but certainly big enough for a few supplies or purchases. I really liked how the sun visor can be detached and then adjusted to provide exactly the right angle to keep your child in the shade. With a really nice suspension system that smoothes out bumps and jolts, the Chicco Capri is truly a great umbrella stroller model.

Summer Infant 2015 3D Lite Convenience Stroller

Summer Infant 2015 3D Lite Convenience Stroller

With three different appealing color designs to choose from, the Summer Infant 2015 3D Lite is a huge improvement over their earlier model. Your child can ride in comfort with a seat that reclines to four different positions. I also appreciated the canopy and sun visor, both of which can be removed and/or adjusted to provide shade at just the right angle. The seat is also big enough to handle my son with ease, something not ever umbrella stroller model could do.

Easily my favorite part of the Summer Infant 2015 3D Lite is all the storage. There’s a really big basket underneath as well as a pocket on the rear, so you can really load this stroller down if you’re on vacation or at the grocery store. When it’s time to fold it up, just push it together and it locks into place, a great feature if you’re ever had to deal with a stroller that just won’t stay closed. When you’re carrying it long distances, it even has a strap on the side. All this and weighing about 12 pounds makes the Summer Infant 2015 3D Lite one of the finer umbrella models that I had the pleasure of reviewing.

Summer Infant Go Lite Convenience Stroller

Summer Infant Go Lite Convenience Stroller

Another great model from the folks at Summer Infant, the Go Lite Convenience is definitely the right name for this stroller. Available in two bright color designs, the stroller is slightly heftier than other models at 15.8 pounds but definitely still easy for a petite woman like me to lift and carry. The front wheels have some kind of fancy suspension system that makes it glide like a dream even when crossing over bumpy or uneven terrain. The basket underneath is big enough for just about anything you’d need on a travel stroller and the rear wheels stay immobile when you push the brake.

For your child’s convenience and safety, there’s a 5-point harness and the seat can be reclined to a number of different positions. The canopy can fold down to provide good protection from the sun. All in all, one of the most convenient day strollers that I had the pleasure of reviewing.

Baby Trend Rocket Lightweight Stroller

Baby Trend Rocket Lightweight Stroller

I certainly have no intention of taking my child on a jog with the Baby Trend Rocket Lightweight but it definitely glides smoothly and easily over bumpy terrain and grass with no problem. There’s a nice foot-activated brake for when you need to keep it still and the pushing handles/grips have a padded design that’s pretty comfortable. Weighing about 12.5 pounds all told, it’s not the world’s lightest stroller but I never had any trouble lifting or carrying it.

On sunny days, the canopy comes down quite a ways and does a good job of keeping my child in the shade. I really liked how the Baby Trend Rocket had a tray on the back for keeping little items like my keys or my phone. The basket underneath is plenty big enough for whatever supplies you need to keep on hand. Like many of the other top models I reviewed, the Baby Trend Rocket Lightweight features a five-point harness that keeps your child securely in place while still remaining comfortable.

Umbrella Stroller Buying Guide

When shopping for Umbrella Stroller, be sure to consider the following:

  • Weight – Whether you’re a petite parent or simply don’t want to throw out your back every time you’ve got to carry the stroller around, weight is essential in an umbrella design. Anything under 20 pounds is pretty easy for a petite woman like me to handle.
  • Compactness – Umbrella strollers are, by definition, compact but the best models easily squeeze into an overhead compartment on a plane or in the back seat of a small car.
  • Storage Area – Once you’re using the stroller and have your child on board, storage becomes important. Whether you’re using it to store a diaper bag, juice and snacks for your child, or as a place to store purchase made along the way, storage becomes important on trips.
  • Canopy – Nothing’s worse than seeing your child squirm on a hot sunny day when they’re exposed to bright light. A good canopy and sun visor combination will keep your kid not only protected from the sun but also nice and cool.
  • Seat Reclining – Sitting upright is great for when your little one is active, but the ability to adjust how the seat reclines is perfect for when they start to get sleepy or nod off.
  • Safety Harness – Nobody plops their child unsecured in a stroller these days, but the top umbrella stroller models have a comfortable and ultra-secure harness design that won’t pinch or chafe.

Now that I’m a full-time mom, I decided to focus less on the “stay at home” part and spend more time out and about with my kids. There are some wonderful “heavy duty” strollers out there on the market but for convenience, I wanted to review and test the best umbrella style models that fold up easily and are compact enough to fit into an airplane overhead compartment or the back seat of a small car. There were lots of lightweight strollers out there to match any budget, but I especially liked how some of the more innovative models combine durability and comfort while still remaining compact and easy to carry or lift up above your head.

After giving several different models a thorough testing with both my 3-year-old and 7-month-old infant, I narrowed down the top models to ones that were easy to maneuver even across bumps and uneven terrain, had plenty of onboard storage, featured a nice canopy and sun visor to keep my child protected from the sun, and had comfortable handles or a bar for pushing. I especially liked having a tray for both me and my child. The color designs and options are not only pleasing to look at but seem to be tastefully gender neutral in case you’re buying one as a present for an expecting mother. Now no longer flimsy strollers that pinch or slice your fingers when folding up, today’s top umbrella strollers truly make traveling with your child a pleasure.
