How Blogging Can Be the Start of a Career Change
Millions of people worldwide go about their daily 9-5’s while daydreaming about a change in career. The good news is, in today’s career landscape there is almost limitless opportunities for those who want to go out and grab one of those opportunities.
The bad news is, and always has been, the excuses people make and the self-doubt. Most of us have been guilty of this from time-to-time, right? Ever said any of the following to yourself:
- I don’t have the time to make a career change
- I don’t want to learn a new skillset and industry
- I don’t have the money to start again from the bottom
Well, I don’t believe in ‘don’t’ or ‘can’t’, I am much more of a ‘do’ and ‘can’ kind of person. There is something that anyone can start in their spare time. Not only is it fun, interesting, and won’t cost you very much, but it has been a springboard for a dynamic career change for many people.
….It’s called Blogging.
Blogging is becoming more and more popular every day. It’s been on an astronomic rise for years now, and that’s a good thing for you. But there are a lot of misconceptions about blogging for those who have never blogged. It’s not difficult at all, and blogging from the comfort of your own home can introduce you to a new industry or profession.
Here are some reasons why starting a blog may be a good idea for you, and how it may lead onto some other career options:
Expressing your opinions and thoughts
A blog is not just an online journal, but it is a place for people to post their thoughts and opinions on different topics and subjects. Often resulting in a healthy debate from people with interest in the same subject that you’re blogging about. This can easily lead to meeting and networking with a group of people you would otherwise not have crossed paths with.
Marketing and promoting products
Blogging is a great way to promote or sell products. Maybe you already have some homemade products you want to sell, or you want to start buying and selling other items. Blogging about the products will help attract eyes and most likely sales.
There is no greater feeling than helping others, right? Well through the medium of blogging you have the potential to help millions of other people. If you have advice, tips, and information you want to share, blogging is the way to do it.
To put yourself out there as an expert
If you think you are an expert in a specific field, build a blog about it. Over time it will develop into an authority site and you will start to gain recognition. You will likely open up possibilities to get a job in the chosen profession that you are establishing yourself an expert in. It’s a great addition to the resume.
To meet like-minded people
Blogs are written for people to read. If people are looking for and reading blogs they are interested in, that means you’ll meet people with similar interests. This opens up opportunities to collaborate with these people, and add them to your network of contacts. There is a good chance you will be made aware of any jobs going in the industry you’re blogging in.
To express creativity
A blog is a great way to try out things that you would otherwise not have tried. With the added benefit of having brutally honest internet browsers to leave a comment. So express your creative side, if you always wanted to publish some artwork, publish it online. It you enjoy writing short stories, why not publish them on a blog for people to read?
To make money
Let’s be honest, making money is one of the biggest reasons start to blog. There are no guarantees however, and I personally don’t recommend you go into blogging assuming you are going to make money from it. However, if you blog with passion and regularity, the money will start to come as the traffic increases.
Most importantly, do not give up!
There are numerous inspirational quotes around the subject of never giving up, and one that always resonated with me was by Thomas Edison, and he simply said;
I always had this in the back of my mind when I started my first blog. After several months it seemed like no-one was interested in what I had to say, and felt like I was wasting my time. But I am the type never to give up, so I just increased my effort.
It took a further few months, but I started to get some momentum. Once the ball started to roll, it just became faster and faster. So I know what it’s like to start a new blog, and I know what it’s like when it finally pays off. It’s worth it, so remember the key – never give up, always try one more time.
So, are you going to take the first step?
I am fairly sure you have read something in this post that set a light bulb off in your head, right? There must be something you are passionate about, interested in, or want to learn about. So why not start blogging about it.
You’ll make new connections with people, learn a lot of new skills, from; setting up a blog, to expanding your knowledge in the topic you’re blogging about. And, who knows a new career doing something you are passionate about may be waiting just around the corner for you.
I’d love to hear personally from anyone who has been thinking about starting a blog. If you need an extra little motivation, or want any further tips – feel free to leave a comment here or contact me.
