The biggest problem for most businesses is: How to get more targeted traffic to their website.

Without traffic, a website will not generate any revenue. A few years ago I was in the same boat. Even after I created great content, no one was reading it.

I didn’t give up and managed to drive millions of visitors to my website and for my clients. Let’s learn the most effective tactics that will help you do the same.

First, define your target market.

This is your first important step. You do not need to appeal to everyone except your target audience, who provides your biggest Return On Investment (ROI).

Only your target audiences will:

· Read your content when they are on your website

· Comment

· Share your website on social media or start following you

· Subscribe to your mailing list

· Come back

· Buy your products and services

· Recommend you?

The most important demographic factors for your target audience are:

· Age

· Gender

· Job Description

· Hobbies?

Now we can move forward and learn the steps that define where your target audience is online.

Do a Google search of your top competitors and study their advertising pages. They often use the same general demographic data.

l Search for industry research and case studies

l Finding your audiences on social media.

There is demographic data for every major social network, and you should concentrate your efforts on these major groups. For example, if your target demographic is women ages 18-29, you want to know that 34% of Pinterest users are in this age group. Use this piece of information as a foundation to learn about demographics from other social networks. Join sub communities and in particular, social networks, and try to identify who they are and what they need.

Competition Research (or what your audience wants)

Load your competitor’s website or popular pages in Google Keyword Planner. It will give you ideas about the keywords your competitors probably use to rank in Google and create content for.

Go to the website BuzzSumo.com and enter in their URL to determine the top content of their website. Alternatively, you can check the competitor’s site manually and look at how many social signals and comments they have on each page. Sometimes social shares are not visible, so you can alternatively use free website ShareTally.co. This is how you will learn more specifically what your target audience wants most.

Take advantage of long tail keywords, which drive most of the organic traffic. Use the web site KeywordTool.io to find long tail keywords that are related to your main search terms. Then load them into Google’s Keyword Planner. That is how you will find out how many searches each keyword phrase has each month.

Check the backlinks of your competitor’s website. Websites that link to your top competitor’s website usually are in the same or related industries. You could potentially spot an opportunity to get links and draw traffic to your business.

Learn How Your Competitors Get Their Traffic

Depending on your niche, you want to start with the website Alexa to determine if a competitor’s website gets real traffic. For example, an Alexa rank of 1 million generally results in the website having about 5,000 monthly visitors. This is the bare minimum for an established website.

To get greater insights you will want to use Similarweb.com. It is a great tool that gives you information about traffic sources such as direct and search traffic, referrals, and social and email traffic.

Similarweb also shows the countries of origin for the specific modes of traffic. Another important feature is their Top Referring Sites, which send traffic. Finally, you can see similar websites within the same industry.

Organic Search Traffic

If Similarweb shows a significant portion of search traffic going to your competitor, you need to dig deeper. Use SEMRush.com to determine the specific keywords any website is already ranking on Google. This is a paid subscription tool, but it could save you hours, if not days, in research, especially if you are new to keyword research.

Optimize Your Content Marketing Strategy

Content marketing is a growing trend. It allows you to attract people’s interest and influence their decision making process.

Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content designed to attract, and retain a clearly defined audience. Ultimately, the goal is to drive profitable customer action. – Content Marketing Institute.

Fifty-five percent of B2B marketers indicate they will increase their content marketing spending in the next 12 months. – Slideshare

· Content Marketing Checklist

· Align your content with specific sub goals

· Target specific elements of your audience

· Ensure your headline is magnetic

· Include images and videos

· Format content to improve readability

· Keep it brief and spot on

· Write longer and more detailed content

· Include a call to action, such as subscribing to your newsletter

· Engage readers and encourage them to comment on your content

· Review your copy for grammatical and spelling errors

Repurpose Your Content

Content creation is expensive. You can get more out of your article by:

· Using a shorter, bullet-style version for social networks

· Rewriting your article and publishing it on medium or pitching it to popular sites in your industry

· Posting a brief, rewritten version on relevant web forums, linking it back to your original article

· Turning it into an infographic

· Creating a slide presentation

· Compiling a video

· Recording a podcast

Outreach to Influencers to Your Industry

Sadly, even if you create top of the line content on your website but are new in your industry, no one will see the content unless you promote it.

One of the best ways to promote your content is to contact people in your niche or relevant industry.

A few ways to find influencers:

· Conduct a Google search and look for contact information on their website

· Search for your keywords with a hashtag (#) in social networks like Twitter

· Use Buzzsumo to define who has shared similar content on social media

· Use Klout to find top experts

DIY Free and Fresh Promotion

Be active on social media and publish top quality content using relevant hashtags. You can use tools such as Snip.ly to maximize your social media efforts.

Be an active participant in social media communities. Google Plus is very active. Submit your content.

Create a list of the top blogs in your industry and create an RSS alert to be notified when a new post is published. Participate in the discussion with meaningful comments. If you are one of the first commenters, you can get good amounts of traffic. Also, if regular blog owners or authors remember you, it may result in an opportunity to communicate with them via email.

Leverage forums in your niche. Participate actively in discussions. Most forums have a paid advertising section that is usually very cheap.

Use guest postings to associate your business with bigger and more famous brands in your industry. If you can get published on high traffic websites such as Blogtrepreneur, you will get relevant traffic as well.

Conclusion

Getting traffic to your website is a challenge, but with the development of a detailed plan and hard work, it will just be a matter of time before you start to get steady traffic. You may have to invest a little money, and a fair amount of patience is required. What I have presented here is a combination of knowledge and experience that has generated positive results for me – and can for you too.
