The majority of truck drivers around the age of 55 years old. As the older generation gets ready to retire, the trucking industry faces a massive shortage of drivers. Millennials have little to no desire to work in-demand trucking industry jobs.

Baby Boomers are having trouble wrapping their heads around the reason. Many of us misunderstand millennials. You may be considering why millennials are having a hard time finding jobs. More so, you might think why would they not jump at the opportunity for one? Here are the reasons why millennials are not replacing truck driving jobs.

Disciplined Lifestyle

Most millennials over the age of 21 love to have a fun filled lifestyle. They live a lifestyle that promotes drinking alcohol and late nights out. In fact, most millennials make plans for a date or social gathering at bars. More so, many millennials drink at home on a regular basis. This is part of their lifestyle. In contrast, truck drivers are not permitted to consume alcohol regularly.

According to the Barnes Firm, an accident injury lawyer, “Truck drivers and truck companies have a duty to safely operate their commercial vehicles on the road.” This requires truckers to have a very disciplined lifestyle without drinking or late nights. Therefore, millennials would have to alter their entire lifestyle. This disciplined lifestyle is one of the major reasons millennials aren’t replacing in-demand trucking industry jobs.

Societal Expectations

Another reason why millennials aren’t replacing in-demand trucking industry jobs is their families’ and friends’ expectations. The most common stereotype associated with truck drivers is the overweight and dirty driver. While this is far from the average truck driver, millennials care immensely about what their family members and peers think of them. Furthermore, they have been brought up to desire white-collar jobs. They thrive for careers in management, law or medicine. Their families expect them to get such jobs. Until this stigma changes, young adults may wait to consider jobs in the trucking industry.

Weight Gain Probability

Millennials also bypass trucking jobs due to the weight gain often associated with it. They obsess over fitness, one of the many trends among the younger generation. While many perceive millennials as weak, young adults are currently competing against one another to be the fittest, skinniest, and/or healthiest.

Because of this, specialized diets are on the rise in their generation. Such diets consist of paleo, vegan, and gluten-free diets. Consider how difficult it may be to find appropriate food options on the road. Additionally, millennials believe it’s extremely difficult to have a healthy body while living in a truck and possibly sleeping in it too. Weight gain is yet another component keeping millennials from replacing trucking industry jobs.

Less Millennials Have Drivers’ Licenses

Many millennials do not have a driver’s license to start with. They are attracted to large cities where they can walk, bike or ride to work. Since the trucking industry requires a CDL license, it eliminates a large percentage of millennials who are not interested in driving at all. In fact, research shows that there has been a significant drop in the number of people receiving drivers’ licenses after the Baby Boomer generation. You can attribute this decline to less millennials driving on the road due to costs, interest or sustainability. With this in mind, millennials who are not drivers are not replacing the new jobs within the trucking industry.

Decreased Screen Time

Lastly, millennials need to spend time on their phones. They frown upon the small amount of phone time truck drivers receive. Less phone access does not support their connected lives on social media. As you may be aware, most millennials spend a large portion of their days on their mobile devices.

From texting to social media engagement, they need their technology time. Since truckers are driving the majority of the day, they have very little time to socialize through technology. That would leave less time for Instagram posting and Snapchat story making. This is yet another way the truck driving lifestyle conflicts with that of millennials. Consequently, it is another reason why millennials aren’t replacing trucking jobs.

Undoubtedly, millennials are not interested in the trucking industry jobs that are available. The reasons above show how this profession conflicts with their ideal lifestyle. The truck driving lifestyle does not allow for a lot of drinking or partying. Furthermore, millennials have a stigma towards blue-collar jobs. The probable weight gain factor is displeasing to young adults as well. Additionally, less millennials have drivers’ licenses, keeping them from being able to drive trucks. They also spend a lot of time on their phones, which is restricted in the trucking industry. These are all reasons why millennials aren’t replacing the highly demanded trucking jobs.
